Hardly becoming, Ford have been market leader there for decades, mainly because they used to have a substantial manufacturing presence with something like 50,000 hourly paid employees in the 1970s. Since then it’s been gradually whittled away with production of the last complete vehicle, the Transit van, moving to Turkey a couple of years ago. Manufacturing now is confined to petrol engines in Wales and diesels in Dagenham, near London. They transferred several components factories to a separate company who went broke and abandoned truck and tractor making.
